Forbidden Things – Chapter 5

She wiped her mouth and looked in the mirror. Her eyes were puffy and red. She needed to wake Mitch up. They had to talk, get on the same page. Her stomach twisted and turned, her heart filled with shame. “Mitch,” she said, shaking his shoulder, “Mitch come on wake up.” He opened his eyes dreamily, smiled and pulled her in for a kiss. Her hand reached out to stop him and with that, he fully woke up.

“No Mitch, we can’t,” she said. “This was wrong; it wasn’t right. I don’t know what I was thinking”. He sat up on the bed and listened to her speak, letting her get her worries and fears off her chest. Then he began. As he spoke he became more animated; his eyes shone with the sincerity of what he said. He patted the spot next to him, and April sat. She listened to his words, felt the convictions of his beliefs.

She didn’t trust herself to speak. How could someone so young, understand so much more than she? His words felt like a salve, covering the wounds of her damaged and confused soul. She inched closer to him, took his proffered hand. “Look,” he said, “my dorm is ready next week, and then I’m gone. I promise you, right here and now, that no one will ever know what we did. Too many people would be hurt, and we love them too much. Let’s just enjoy this brief time together, make it into a memory that is just for you and me”.

She found herself leaning down towards him, her fingers stroking his cheek. He kissed her again but this time, it was tender, slow. He wrapped her in his arms and pulled her onto him, lifting her dress above her, waist. He entered her and they made love, a chance to connect, a chance to say goodbye. This time, she felt no guilt, only pleasure, and new found resolve. Mitch was a forbidden desire, something she would not pursue again. This experience, however, had opened her eyes.  She was in a cage

When Mitch left, she” The next morning, sitting in her comfy chair, a cup of coffee in hand, April looked through the help wanted sections and began to circle jobs. Perhaps she and Jay could work things out, perhaps not. Either way, she was ready to for a new chapter in her life. “To being brave,” she thought as she circled a job that might fit. Time to open the doors, stretch her wings, and see if she could fly.
